Abstract
This article aimed to analyze the reality of Islamic education in Sudan as a historical and cultural institution that has contributed significantly to shaping national and religious identity, with particular emphasis on the relationship between traditional Islamic education, the Arabic language, and the transformations associated with modernization and digital technology. The study was grounded in a central problem concerning how Sudanese Islamic education evolved across different historical periods and the extent to which it influenced the construction of cultural and religious identity amid contemporary political, colonial, and digital transformations.
The study employed the historical-analytical method and the critical conceptual approach through an examination of the development of Islamic education from the emergence of khalwa institutions during the era of Islamic kingdoms, through the Turkish-Egyptian rule, the Mahdist Revolution, British colonialism, the post-independence period, and finally the contemporary digital transformation. The study also relied on the analysis of intellectual and educational literature related to Islamic education, identity, the Arabic language, and educational technology within a comparative framework linking historical transformations with the social and cultural structure of Islamic education in Sudan.
The findings revealed that Islamic education in Sudan was not merely a traditional religious system for transmitting religious and legal knowledge; rather, throughout its historical evolution, it represented a central instrument for reproducing national and religious identity and preserving the Arabic language as a civilizational vessel of cultural belonging. The results further demonstrated that the khalwa played a pivotal role in constructing collective consciousness and consolidating religious and cultural values. Nevertheless, Islamic education remained, in many of its stages, governed by a traditional epistemological structure centered on memorization and rote learning, with limited openness to modern sciences and the requirements of economic and social development. The study also showed that Islamic education underwent successive structural transformations linked to changes in the nature of political authority and the state, shifting from a community-based model grounded in the authority of the shaykh and the khalwa to a more centralized model associated with projects of the modern state, the Islamization of knowledge, and the Arabization of education. However, these transformations did not fully succeed in constructing a balanced educational model capable of reconciling religious authenticity with the demands of modernity due to the persistence of structural imbalances related to curricula, educational centralization, and unequal educational opportunities between rural and urban areas.
The study further explained that digital transformation represents a new phase in the history of Sudanese Islamic education, as it has reshaped the relationship between religious knowledge and educational authority through the transition from closed traditional spaces to open digital environments. Although digital technology has provided broad opportunities for expanding access to Islamic education, particularly amid political crises and armed conflicts, it has simultaneously generated challenges related to weak infrastructure, the decline of the traditional teacher-student relationship, and the growing influence of cultural globalization and artificial intelligence in shaping religious consciousness and cultural identity.
The study concludes that the future of Islamic education in Sudan requires a reconstruction of its educational philosophy in a manner that balances religious foundations with the demands of the digital age. This can be achieved through curriculum development, strengthening integration between religious and applied sciences, and expanding the use of educational technology within a comprehensive strategic vision that contributes to reinforcing national and religious identity while promoting intellectual and social development.
