Research Abstract
This research aims to clarify Imam al-Shafi’i’s position on the authority of hadith, particularly the hadith of a single narrator, and to reveal his scholarly methodology in refuting the approaches that sought to reject the Prophetic Sunnah based on reason and opinion. In his book, al-Risalah, al-Shafi’i established a comprehensive legal framework in which he affirmed the binding nature of the Sunnah in Islamic law. He demonstrated that a hadith of a single narrator, if it meets the conditions of acceptance-namely, a continuous chain of transmission, the integrity of the narrators, and their accuracy-constitutes a legitimate legal proof that must be acted upon.
The research highlights that al-Shafi›i did not exclude or disregard reason. Rather, he defined its role as understanding, deduction, and weighing evidence, rejecting its use as a counterpoint to the text or as a judge over it. He clarified that rejecting the Sunnah on the grounds of its contradiction with reason or opinion leads to the suspension of divine revelation and undermines the foundations of legal reasoning. The research also reveals the argumentative methodology adopted by al-Shafi›i in refuting his opponents who relied on reasoned opinion and analogy, demonstrating his methodological balance between textual evidence and reason. This balance is what made him the true founder of the science of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) and the founder of the moderate school that combined the scholars of hadith and those who relied on reasoned opinion.
The importance of this research lies in highlighting the fundamental principles established by Imam al-Shafi›i to protect the Prophetic Sunnah from attempts at invalidation, both past and present, and in connecting his methodology to contemporary realities in light of the resurgence of calls that prioritize reason over religious texts.
