Research Abstract
This research addresses the methodology adopted by Imam al-Shafi’i in documenting narrators of the Prophetic Hadith and the scientific criteria he applied to establish the authority of the Hadith and the obligation to act upon it, provided that the necessary conditions are met for both the narrator and the narrated text. Regarding the narrator, he must be a person of integrity («adl»), truthful, and righteous, and not a concealer of flaws in the chain («mudallis»). Regarding the narrated text, the chain («isnad») must be continuous, the narration must come from a correct, authentic written source, and it must not contradict the reports of reliable narrators. If a contradiction occurs, the correct report is determined by following the narration of the most memorizing/precise reporter («ahfaz»). Also, narration by meaning is not accepted unless the reporter is knowledgeable in the nuances of the Arabic language.
The study compares his methodology with that of the Hadith scholars (Muhaddithin) in documenting narrators, concluding that he agreed with their scientific criteria in authentication. Consequently, he upheld the authority of acting upon solitary reports («khabar al-ahad») whenever it is narrated by a reliable narrator from a similar one, up to the end of the chain, with a connected, non-anomalous («non-shadh»), and faultless («non-mu’allal») chain.
