Imam al-Shafi’i’s methodology represents a foundational scholarly model for establishing and strengthening the authority of the Prophetic Sunnah, grounded in rigorous legal reasoning, a disciplined balance between textual evidence and rational inquiry, and a firm affirmation of the Sunnah as an essential source of Islamic legislation alongside the Qur’an. Through his systematic approach-most notably articulated in al-Risala-al-Shafi‘i laid down clear principles for the authentication and use of Prophetic traditions, countering tendencies that privileged subjective reasoning over revealed texts. In the contemporary context, this methodology proves highly relevant in addressing modern skepticism toward the Sunnah and responding to excessive rationalist trends that seek to marginalize or reinterpret Prophetic traditions beyond their intended meanings. By applying al-Shafi‘i’s balanced framework, a contemporary Islamic legal discourse can be developed that upholds the authority of the Sunnah while remaining intellectually rigorous, dialogical, and responsive to modern challenges.
