Abstract
This study aims to investigate the vocabulary of the upper class in Abu Ali Al-Qali’s Al-Amali, by analyzing its semantic dimensions, contextual relations, and the historical evolution it underwent from the pre-Islamic (Jahili) period to the Abbasid era. Adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, the study examines six primary terms signifying authority and governance: Amir (Commander/Prince), Khalifah (Caliph), Sultan (Authority), Malik (King), Wali (Governor), and Wazir (Minister). These terms appear in 170 instances throughout the text. The findings reveal the predominance of the term Amir (53%), reflecting the extensive distribution of administrative positions during that era. Furthermore, the semantic analysis demonstrates synonymous relationships among terms such as Khalifah, Sultan, and Malik within contexts of absolute rule. The study also traces the historical semantic shift of these terms; for instance, the term Khalifah transitioned from a general linguistic concept to a specific religious-political symbol, while Wali shifted from denoting a “supporter” to an “administrative governor.” Additionally, the results indicate that 75% of the contexts in which these terms were utilized were formally political, mirroring the dominant discourse of the Abbasid period. In conclusion, this research provides an analytical model of the semantic fields related to terms of authority, illustrating how they reflect the socio-political structures embedded in the Arabic heritage.
