Abstract
This study examines the verses depicting the trial of Jonah (peace be upon him) and his blessed end through an analytical, rhetorical, and comparative approach within the Quranic discourse. It aims to elucidate the rhetorical and semantic subtleties in presenting the narrative of Prophet Jonah across three chapters: Al-Anbiya, As-Saaffat, and Al-Qalam. Furthermore, it demonstrates the structural symmetry and contextual harmony between the thematic flow of each Surah and the phrasing of the ordeal, leading up to deliverance and a favorable outcome. The study employs a comparative rhetorical-analytical methodology to track stylistic structures and weigh the nuanced differences between textual formulations and the epithets attributed to the Prophet in the three chapters.
The study concludes that the stylistic variations across these textual contexts are governed by a miraculous, eloquent arrangement. Surah Al-Anbiya emphasizes the psychological dimension (remorse and repentance) to align with the theme of answered supplication. Surah As-Saffat focuses on kinetic and temporal details, alongside the manifestations of Divine Grace, fitting the context of election and glorification. Meanwhile, Surah Al-Qalam adheres to strict conciseness and admonition to counsel the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and caution him against haste. Additionally, the comparative analysis between the titles Dhu al-Nun (The Companion of the Whale) and Sahib al-Hut (The Companion of the Fish) reveals that the former was employed in contexts of honor, praise, and emulation, whereas the latter appeared in contexts of moral lesson, discipline, and warning against the consequences of impatience
